Arts NT would like it known that NT artists - including musicians - have until March 15th to get applications in for this year's round of NT arts grants, especially the Declan Apuatimi/J. Bird Public Art Fellowship, which "aims to supports professional development opportunities for contemporary artists" interested in practicing "public art". There are also a range of other grants available. Looking for the 'Perfect Artist'...

Matt Gingold needs your help! The Melbourne media artist is on a quest to document as many creative people across Australia as he can! Called 'The Perfect Artist', it is a national video portrait project, funded by Arts Victoria and others. From March 9 - 14 Matt is setting up camp at Brown's Mart in Darwin, video camera in tow. He will shoot video portraits of as many NT creative types as possible - from musicians and performers to arts workers and administrators.

Chooky Dancers centre stage at Adelaide Festival!

Elcho Island’s Chooky Dancers will feature at this year’s Adelaide International Arts Festival (February 26 – March 14), in a collaboration with award-winning theatre director Nigel Jamieson, called ‘Ngurrumilmarrmiriyu’ (“Wrong Skin”). Another Territory song has made its presence felt on triple j Unearthed! This week Alice Springs single Wiya! Angela Pamela has climbed to #4 of the triple j Unearthed chart. The song is a collaboration between Alice outfit the Super Raelene Bros and the Little Sister's Collective - Western Arrarnta and Luritja musicians from Little Sisters Town Camp on the outskirts of Alice Springs. NT singers Leah Flanagan (Leah Flanagan Band, pictured above) and Paul 'Djolpa' McKenzie (Wildwater) will perform as part of the Black Arm Band tour to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, February 10-13. The Black Arm Band will perform with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in Hidden Republic, an "intercultural contemporary musical presentation", with the performance "offered to the large First Nations community... as a free concert and gift to the people of Vancouver". 2010 promises to be another big year for Elcho Island world music superstar, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. With album sales continuing to power in Europe, not only will he play two dates in Paris in April, he will feature in another TV broadcast on European television, this time on Italian TV on Feb 25. Gurrumul's debut album has also come in at #6 in the BBC's 'Best albums for 2009' World Music list. More here.

For the first time CMJ Music Marathon - "New York City's largest music festival" - is accepting submissions via Sonicbids, asking artists to apply early through the online "gatekeeper" between bands and promoters. Sonicbids is a platform used by a good number of Territory bands and artists.

"Attracting more than 120,000 music professionals, artists and music enthusiasts" every year, CMJ say they will be booking "50 artists who submit by March 31, 2010." So if you were kinda sorta thinking about submitting, now might be a good time... Apply via Sonicbids.

Skinnyfish 'seeds' partnership with JB

JB Seed Fund (now simply called "The Seed") has announced a partnership with Skinnyfish Music for a new funding initiative entitled the "Skinny Fish Indigenous Community Music Initiative." With the support of The Seed, Darwin-based record label, distributor and publisher of Indigenous music Skinnyfish will "create paid performance opportunities for community bands in and around their homelands" through "existing and established festivals and events". The deadline for applications is March 15, 2010.

The Seed also invites applications for its other funds, including Art For The Public and the Management Workshop Initiative, of which NT singer/songwriter Jess Ribeiro was a recipient in 2009. Visit The Seed website for details.

Hilltop Hoods Help Hip Hop

Aussie Hip Hop supergroup Hilltop Hoods - in association with APRA - have announced a funding intitiative to help Australian-grown Hip Hop music. Called “The Hilltop Hoods Initiative” they will give “one emerging Australian Hip Hop artist a career starting opportunity with $10,000 to release and promote an album”. It is open to emerging Hip Hop artists who have not released an album professionally or commercially." The winner will also be invited to showcase at the 2010 Song Summit.

Youth Arts Queensland is inviting Australian artists to apply for the JUMP National Mentoring Program for Young & Emerging Artists. JUMP “supports the career development of artists aged 18-30 in the first five years of their professional practice, by providing mentoring opportunities with established professionals in their artform." Mentored artists receive funding of up to $5,000.

National arts body "OzCo" has announced that Round Two of its $10,000 ArtStart grants is now open. ArtStart is a newly created grant scheme from the Australia Council of the Arts, designed to help budding artists grow an "income-generating career". ArtStart grants can be used for "developing skills and business support, renting studio space or tools, getting expert business advice, growing skills in marketing and promotion, or putting together a portfolio".

Opportunity for unsigned Indigenous artists

The Australian Music Radio Airplay Project (Amrap) and The Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN) have announced that Australian Indigenous artists are the first unsigned artists eligible to access Amrap’s AirIT. AirIT is community radio’s exclusive catalogue of Australian music curated by Amrap. Until now artists available on AirIT were mostly signed to major or independent record labels.

Up to three tracks from every Indigenous release recommended by AMIN will be added to Amrap’s AirIT. The partnership will see a number of Indigenous artists added to AirIT each month. For further details and announcements, visit AirIT at the AMRAP website.

Rico Adjrun appointed to Radio National

Music NT Forum member Rico Adjrun - and talented NT electronic artist - has been appointed "Co-Producer" of Radio National's Indigenous culture program, Awaye. He will remain based at ABC Darwin (1 Cavanagh Street). In his new role Rico will be "constantly on the lookout for stories that educate in Aboriginal arts and culture - no matter if the story is 'grand' or 'grassroots'," he wants to "hear about it!"

Vinyl sales hit a historical high last year as US music purchases climbed 2.1 percent year on year and digital sales accounted for 40 percent of total US music purchases, Nielsen SoundScan confirmed today, up from 32% in 2008.
The news follows an August 2009 NPD Group report which confirmed iTunes-purchased songs now account for 25 percent of the overall music market--both physical and digital - in the U.S..
(During the first half of 2009, iTunes itself snagged a 69 percent share of the overall digital music arena, trailed far behind by Amazon.com with 8 percent - this may have changed but we haven’t yet sourced recent relevant data).
Nielsen also note that 10 billion music purchases were made in the US during the last decade (ie, music is not dead). The researchers also provided a dizzying selection of statistics, confirming an 8.3 percent rise in digital track sales (now 1,159 million), while digital album sales reached new records, up 16.1 percent to 76.4 million.

News from Down South: Music support agencies Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN), Arts Victoria, APRA, AIR and The Push have formed a partnership to investigate the establishment of a new Victorian music industry representative body to provide advocacy, resources and services for individuals and businesses in the Victoria. Currently There is no active peak body representing the Victorian music industry.

Music makers and businesses are now being consulted. Throughout December '09 and into early 2010, people participating in the wider music industry are invited to provide their views in an online survey, or to make a submission to further contribute ideas and highlight relevant issues. Oz bands centre stage

Federal Arts Minister Peter Garrett (above in a previous life as Oils frontman) has released a discussion paper on the Foreign Music Act Certification Scheme. It outlines a proposed approach to implement the election commitment to “ensure Australian musicians get to share the spotlight with international acts touring the country.” Mr. Garrett urges "musicians, promoters, tour organisers and interested community members to comment on the discussion paper.”

Federal Arts Minister Peter Garrett has announced a second round of Breakthrough funding for Indigenous artists. Breakthrough is a pilot initiative of the Cultural Ministers Council which aims to "take Indigenous contemporary music to a wider listening audience". NT act Leah Flanagan Band (above) was one of Breakthrough's successful recipients in 2009.

The Minister has announced a continuation of Breakthrough for a further 12 months. The fund makes available up to $25 000 to successful applicants to assist with the high quality recording of a CD. This can include studio/equipment hire, mixing fees, CD manufacture and so forth. Applications will be available mid-December. WAMi open to non-WA acts

Artist submissions are now open to non-WA acts to play at next year's West Australian Music Industry Festival (WAMi) Showcase. The WAMi Festival will run from 19-23 May, 2010. Submissions close on Friday 15 January. WAMi Festival Director Sarah Norton says that in addition to local WA acts being programmed at next year's festival, "A couple of acts from outside WA will also be given spaces".

In a world swamped by online music, downloads and the rules n' regs that go with it, a new website promises artists freedom and choice when it comes to selling their tunes online. Band Camp allows artists to choose how much they want sell their music for, and asks music fans to pay what they can afford... Artists can choose between "giving away" their music for free, "setting a price" or "letting folks name their price." So far three Territory artists are known to have gone to Band Camp: Blastcorp, Red Plum & Snow and Cooperblack. "It's only been one day and already 12 people have bought stuff" says Blastcorp's Kris Keogh. "The free/pay what you want model works!"

CAAMA releases 'Desert Pop Lock & Drop'.

Alice Springs-based CAAMA Music have released a brand new compilation CD, “Desert Pop, Lock & Drop”. Proving just how versatile music from the Northern Territory can be, local singers Cassandra Williams and Mei Lai Swan came up with a sound that CAAMA says it’s been "heading for". Other tracks range from hip hop (courtesy of 13 year-old Darlyhne Lillico) and pop rock (Tom Ghea, 'Falling Star'), to lush ballads by Jessica Laruffa ('Feelin' This') and Kirra Voller ('The Ending'), and reggae from the Yuendumu Community. There was much rejoicing in the Alice Springs office of Ngapartji Ngapartji last week. The big hART/Pitjantjatjara Community project announced the release of a nineteen-track compilation CD entitled 'Wanti Watjilpa' or "Don't Be Lonely".

Project officer and Music NT Forum member Beth Sometimes says that "forty-five musicians from Ernabella, Amata and Fregon contributed to the diverse range of sounds and songs on Wanti Watjilpa – kungka, nyitayira, wati, minyma tjuta! Girls, boys, men and women!" She says that "the compilation explores the experimental side of the music scene in Ernabella, which has a long history in harmony singing, ceremony and a recent dynamic engagement with contemporary musical genres." Dave Garnham is in the Grand Final!

Local musician & Music NT Forum member Dave Garnham (The Moving Targets, above) has sung his way into the Grand Final of the Telstra 'Road To Tamworth' national talent search competition!

Performing last Saturday at the V8 Supercar Championships in Sydney, Dave will perform alongside and nine other finalists at the Tamworth Country Music Festival on January 19th 2010, to win the chance to record in Nashville Tennessee, the 'home of country music'. Singing his original song 'Thought I Knew Him', the judges were quoted as saying, "Great song, great performance - David is another of the Territory's well-kept secrets revealed." Congratulations Dave!!

Word through from the Blastcorp camp... After ten years of making "glitch noise, ambient calmness, washing machine music" and "acoustic love songs", NT musician Kris Keogh is finally putting his solo electronic project Blastcorp to bed. Thanking a myriad of friends, fans, collaborators, supporters and more in a group email, his parting gesture is to release a compilation album of 20 songs of work made from 2000-2009. Happy Yess co-founder Kris Keogh is asking Territory music fans to sign a petition to help the venue... Happy Yess is currently undergoing negotiations to relocate to the Courtyard Room at Browns Mart. There are many benefits to the plan, including a stable lease arrangement for the venue (currently on month-to-month) and developmental benefits, including staging larger gigs - thus supporting original music in the Territory on a larger scale - and an increased audience capacity.

New 'Music Clip' Award for NT's Fist Full of Films

Spread the word! Fist Full Of Films Festival has announced it will add a new 'Music Clip' award category to its 2010 Competition. Project manager Dixi Joy says that the entries "must be produced wholly within the Territory" with the majority of the crew NT residents. Clips should be 4 mins or under, with the deadline for entry May 4, 2010. The clips will be screened during the Fist Full of Films Festival June 3-6, 2010 with the winner announced June 5. Regional Arts Australia have sent out an early announcement about their 2010 Volunteer Awards, with nominations to open early in 2010. The Awards are supported by the Australia Council for the Arts.

The Regional Arts Australia Volunteer Awards recognise, reward and encourage regionally-based artists and cultural volunteers who have made a substantial contribution to the arts in regional communities in Australia. Nominate yourself or someone you know who has made a difference in your community. Young people are particularly encouraged to apply. Nominations open 19 February and close 26 March 2010. The 2009 Woodford Folk Festival (Dec 27 - Jan 1) will play host to three Northern Territory bands this year: Leah Flanagan Band from Darwin, Dr. Strangeways from Alice Springs and Iwantja Band (pictured) from the Indulakana Community 360 kms south of Alice Springs. (Although technically from NW SA, the ties to the NT are close and Territorians like to claim Iwantja Band as their own! See this year's Bush Bands Bash at this year's Alice Desert Festival.)

Iwantja Band reckon NT singer Shellie Morris might have had something to do with their selection, spruiking their talents after the Dreaming Festival. Gurrumul keen to come home

Fairfax newspapers published an article this week about Gurrumul's tour to Europe. Having had his biggest international touring year yet, Gurrumul's friend, musician Michael Hohnen (both pictured), told Fairfax the Elcho Island superstar is homesick and wants to come back to the NT and his family. While the tour has been incredibly successful - boosting sales of Gurrumul's debut album to in excess of 250 000 copies - Hohnen says Gurrumul prefers "sitting eating stingray, singing songs, telling stories, just being social". A recent duet Gurrumul recorded with Sting of the Police hit 'Every Breath You Take' will air on French television on December 16. More here.

Wiya Angela Pamela! single launch

Alice Springs band Super Raelene Bros will team up this Friday December 4 with Western Arrarnta and Luritja musicians known as "The Little Sisters Collective", to release single 'Wiya! Angela Pamela'. The song is performed in Luritja and Western Arrarnta, with a smattering of English scattered across a deeply funky dance groove reminiscent of 90’s hit, ‘Treaty’.

The single launch will take place on the Alice Springs Council Lawns. The free event is supported by the Arid Lands Environment Centre and will feature performances by various local artists, speeches, information stalls and a Nuclear Free BBQ. More here.

Twenty-year old NT singer Jessica Mauboy won the first award at last night's 2009 ARIA Awards, held at the Acer Arena in Sydney. She won 'Highest Selling Single' for 'Running Back' from her commercially successful debut album, 'Been Waiting'. Although only winning one award from seven nominations, she told a news conference afterwards, " I was just happy to be there to be able to perform... be there with familiar faces, so no I don’t feel disappointed at all.”

The award tops off a massive year for the NT dance diva, who also took out two gongs at this year's NT Indigenous Music Awards, three Deadlys and last week 'Fave Aussie Singer' at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. Congratulations JM!

In September, 10 NT musicians attended the inaugural Music NT/APRA Songwriters Retreat at Mount Bundy Station, one hour's drive south of Darwin. Norman Brumby, drummer for Utju Band , will attend workshops and the Showcase at the 2009 Island Vibe Festival, North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, October 30 - November 1st, 2009, with fellow Willowra musicians. The workshops will be run by ska/reggae/world music exponent Nicky Bomba who's also performing at the Festival on November 1, forming an 'Allstar Band' for the occasion. Word on the street (ie MuNT Forum member Matt Hill!) is that Nicky "is gonna share the love 'round with his All Star Band, and Norman will be invited to play a track or two with him!" National music industry body the Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN) has appointed Brisbane-based Craig Spann as the organisation’s new coordinator. AMIN actively promotes Australian artists at major overseas events including South by South West (USA), and is currently embarking upon new partnerships in this area under the Sounds Australia banner. Music NT is a member of AMIN, along with Queensland Music Network (Q Music) and the West Australian Music Industry Association (WAM). The Flame Awards 2009 is s nationwide competition to highlight and reward schools with great music programs. Friday night was the small screen debut for 'Venus Jetsetter', aka NT country musician and MuNT Forum member, Charlotte Grace. 'Venus Jetsetter' is the solo dance project for Grace and a radical departure from her previous work. How's this for the name of Darwin's latest band: "Aborted Jesus Milkshake". They may not make many friends in the religious community but that's kinda the point... MuNT Forum member Mitch Williams (Paradox) is one of the founders of extreme grindcore band Aborted Jesus Milkshake. Created partly out of frustration because his "band kept losing drummers," Mitch says "We're still in the songwriting process at the moment and working on a full set... We play brutal death metal and grindcore." Other band members include Olive Hasan-Fourcard (Crassic Park, Paradox), Liam Parry-Mills (Crassic Park) and Jack Reedy (Paradox). A bridge too far: The Go-Betweens

Robert Forster (pictured above left) was a huge hit at the Darwin Festival. The seminal indie singer of The Go-Betweens fame now has a bridge named after the band that spawned him. Brisbane City Council has decided to re-name its newest bridge in honour of one of their greatest bands, "...a fitting tribute to a band that helped put Brisbane’s music industry on the map," says Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman. After running a public competition to name it, Hale Street Bridge will now be known as 'The Go-Betweens Bridge'. The naming ceremony occurred in Brisbane with Robert Forster in attendance. He says, "I’ve always regarded bridges as poetic and romantic, so this is something that really appeals to me." Read more here.

In what can only be called a bumper year for CD releases in the NT (30 and counting so far!), news that four more NT bands have new releases up their sleeves... Electro-pop trio Cooperblack officially launched new EP 'Malaysia' at their Darwin Festival Lighthouse show. Desert ska "funkle tube fusion" exponents Dr. Strangeways are on the verge of releasing 'Strange New World', their debut album. The CD will now be available early-November. Crassic Park are also recording an as yet "untitled" EP, due out November with hard-rock outift Terracotta Pigeons set to release their debut album ‘Ever-Forever-Never’ on October 15. And The Bone Collectors' song It'll Come To Pass was featured during an episode of ABC-TV's Australian Story, entitled 'Her Beauty and Her Terror' about the Black Saturday bushfires.

Federal Arts Minister Peter Garrett has announced that funding has been made available to eight Australian bands, to tour regional and remote areas, including the NT. The funding is for live performances by contemporary Australian bands and artists, including Melbourne musician Dan Kelly, Brisbane jazz quartet Jacam Manricks Quartet and Melbourne tech-metal/"math-rock" band Five Star Prison Cell (pictured above).

The Arts Minister said the bands were receiving a total of $74,500 funding from the Australian Government’s Contemporary Music Touring Program. For further details click here.

A new NT band formed at Alice Desert Festival, which wound up on September 20. "Rocket Sauce now launched" was posted yesterday on the MuNT Forum by member Matt Hill. It was his way of cryptically tipping us off that there's a new kid on the block...

Matt and three other NT musicians formed an impromptu band for the Alice Desert Festival. "Rocket Sauce" explains Matt, is "honky-tonk crooner, roots n' toots, dirty surf n' swingin' funk, with about 45 seconds of drum n bass!" He continues, "it was meant to be a solo set from me but Dr Flouride (Sandridge Band), D-Day (Dr. Strangeways) as well as Danilla Ice popped a band together in 3 days." They then "took the festival by surprise! We are now... ROCKET SAUCE! (rocket sauce!) 'Cause everytime we say it, we say it again!" Watch out for gigs...
